This course provides a comprehensive overview of grid-connected Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), equipping participants with the technical knowledge and practical skills required for designing, installing, and maintaining battery-based storage solutions.
The course begins with an introduction to battery energy storage systems and their role and significance. The course will help learners to explore the core functions of a BESS, different system configurations, and hybrid setups combining PV, batteries, and diesel generators.
The course meticulously covers an in-depth understanding of battery characteristics, including battery storage and capacity, determining battery state of charge, battery charging-discharging, battery life and maintenance. It also covers the various battery technologies in detail, including lithium-ion, lead-acid, flow batteries, and emerging chemistries, along with their applications, advantages, limitations, and safety considerations.
The course also covers power conversion equipment such as inverters and charge controllers. Participants will also study power conversion equipment (PCE) which includes inverter types, topologies, as well as charge controllers.
Participants will learn the fundamentals of preliminary system design, including load assessment and hazard assessment. Equipment sizing and selection is covered in detail, including inverters, batteries, controllers, PV arrays and balance of system components. A detailed understanding on the system layout is discussed in the context of functionality.
System performance, economics and documentation include system performance estimates, detailed example on DC coupled system and AC coupled system, modelling system performance, monitoring, system savings calculations and key economic parameters such as Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) and simple payback. Participants are introduced to documentation and standards necessary for project execution.
System Installation covers the procedure and guidelines to be followed at the time of installation. Participants will also learn about an important parameter required while installation i.e., Work Health and Safety (WHS) with topics such as on-site risk assessment, hazards, safety related to individual components like PV array, batteries and inverters. Following that, the section on operation and maintenance will cover important topics like documentation for O&M, fault finding procedures and battery disposal.
The course concludes with a final exam and a comprehensive design task, where participants apply learned concepts to develop a complete BESS solution based on provided technical and economic parameters.
GSES develops and delivers solar PV training courses in accordance with international competency standards and accreditation requirements. On successful completion of the course, students receive a certificate of completion.
